This site started as a hobby but has grown a lot over the years. It costs money to host and maintain this site and pay for the language translation feature. I would also like to acquire more motors to fix up and be active in organizations like AOMCI. All donations are appreciated and used toward this site and its projects. Hello All, I am a new member to THT and this is my first post. I would like to thank all of you in advance who respond to my question. I just purchased a 1987 Sportcraft 20' center console with an blown OMC Sea Drive. I have read nothing but bad news on the Sea Drive so I want to remove it and install a hydralic jack plate so I can install any outboard motor. My first question does anyone here have any experience in this procedure? Second question is any recommendations on what brand jack plate to use. So, 14 Okt 2018 05:23:00. For this reason, might as well find out any bad news all at once. You need to drill some small holes, maybe something like a 3/8' drill bit through the transom in multiple places. Wood comes out wet, black, or dripping water, you have serious wet/rotten transom going on. Omc Cobra 3.0 ManualSecond, you have to gauge the thickness of the transom. While there is torque on the outdrive, a LARGE portion of the torque on an I/O boat is on the stringers inside the boat, rather than the transom. When you put the OB on it, 100% of your torque will be on the transom. Most likely, you will have to sand down the inner skin, add foam core or plywood, and fiberglass to strengthen the transom. Thirdly, while you are in there, gotta check out the stringers. Especially true if you get iffy results in the transom. Usually water damage shows up in the transom first, then the stringers, then the deck. If you have a spongy deck, you can bet your stringers and transom are that way. Depending on the amount of damage(if any), you may be able to do some area repairs versus full stringer replacement. With the jack-plate, I get the idea that you will be using the boat shallow. If you get a nice outboard bracket with 2' of setback, you will greatly increase the shallow water capacity of the boat. When you bring the motor back, you can also bring it up. I'll draw you a quick pic. I didn't draw a motor, but you can envision up against the hull, the anti-ventilation plate basically wants to be close to the level of the water. If you go back a few feet, you see how the water rises behind the boat. By bringing up the ventilation plate, you ultimately bring up the height of the motor, meaning less below the level of the keel. Omc Cobra Manual FreeMaking it possible to drive in shallower water. I wouldn't agree the best answer bones, with all due respect. He needs to determine the need for flotation bracket or not. In most cases, I think the flotation beneficial. I do agree that a portabracket or jackplate would be faster and maybe cheaper but potentially a shortcut that could cause regret.
